The survey, run every five years, collects detailed information on the energy demand and consumption patterns of Canadian organizations and institutions, their buildings and establishments. Statistics Canada will be conducting the survey on behalf of Natural Resources Canada and contacting potential participants.

Data obtained from this survey will provide information for measuring energy efficiency and for developing policies and programs that benefit individual businesses and the sector in Canada as a whole, stated Natural Resources. Survey data will also be used to update the 1-100 ENERGY STAR scores currently available through ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager and to create new 1-100 ENERGY STAR scores for building types not currently able to receive a score.

The government noted industry associations, building managers and business owners will also obtain up-to-date data on similar buildings with which to compare their own energy consumption, while energy specialists and consumers will be able to learn more about the energy consumption patterns of buildings.

An introductory package will be sent to each respondent explaining the survey and the process, followed by a telephone call to collect the data.
