More energy-efficient facilities for Waterloo/Brantford Laurier students in the works
January 18, 2017 - More “modern and sustainable” facilities at Ontario’s Wilfrid Laurier University are in the pipe, thanks to recent government funds.

The investment from the province and the federal government supports Laurier’s sustainable energy management initiative and will allow the university to renew and modernize its building systems on the Waterloo and Brantford campuses, centralizing its energy management system to improve energy efficiency. Design work is already underway, the province notes.
The Laurier Energy Efficiency Project (LEEP) will include solar wall installations, system upgrades and an energy audit, the school adds, noting it will fund the project through a 20-year payback agreement that uses the energy savings to pay for the upgrades through an Energy Service Company (ESCO) agreement with Johnson Controls Inc.
The overall cost to complete this project is approximately $8.9 million and includes $4.4 million from Canada’s Strategic Investment Fund, $2.2 million from Ontario and $2.2 from Laurier.
“Investments like these will support our world-class researchers and position Canada as a global leader in research excellence and innovation,” said Bardish Chagger, leader of the government in the House of Commons.
