A 360-watt metal halide lamp will immediately save 40 watts of power compared to the standard 400-watt model, says the company. A 360-watt metal halide lamp is a direct replacement for a 400-watt model with no ballast change required. Reduced-wattage metal halides have protective shrouds, can be used in open fixtures and are offered as clear or inside frosted models, says the company.

The XP-G LED can produce up to 367 lumens when driven at 1A, at a typical efficacy of 111 lumens per Watt; making it 46 per cent brighter and 64 per cent more efficient than the highest-performance XR-E LED, with an 80 per cent smaller footprint.

"Cree's XLamp XP-G cool white LEDs set a new standard for LED performance," said David Chow, president, 4Sevens, LLC. "For our flashlights, the XLamp
XP-G LED was a clear choice because of its high lumen output, unmatched efficacy and compact package size."

This level of performance can potentially reduce the required number of LEDs, as well as the size and cost of LED fixtures. High efficacy at lower current (up to 132 lm/W typical at 350 mA) can lower the total power requirement for a portable or solar lighting application, which can reduce the amount of solar cells or batteries needed.

"This establishes a new level of performance for LEDs," said Paul Thieken, Cree director of marketing, LED components. "We now deliver lighting-class efficacy at 1A drive current. In addition, we have begun offering limited samples of an S2 flux bin, providing up to 400 lumens at 1A. We target availability of XP-G neutral and warm white LED samples by end of calendar 2009."

Cree, Inc., a market leader in LED lighting, launched the Product Characterization Tool, an interactive LED design tool that simplifies the task of translating nominal LED performance to real-world conditions.

The online tool, accessible via www.cree.com, allows users to easily characterize any XLamp LED over a wide range of operating conditions, including drive current, flux bin, price and junction temperature. It also calculates metrics such as lumen output, lumens per watt, lumens per dollar and more.

Cree's Product Characterization Tool (PCT) introduces advanced functionality not commercially offered by any LED supplier, the company claims. PCT can perform simple LED system design based on a target total lumen output, calculating parameters such as number of LEDs required and total system efficacy. The calculated system parameters take into account electrical, optical and thermal losses associated with LED system performance. In addition, PCT allows users to compare up to three different XLamp LED configurations at once, empowering customers to best choose between the industry-leading XLamp XR, MC and XP package families.

"The Product Characterization Tool acts like an interactive data sheet, giving users a more intuitive way to design LED systems using XLamp LEDs," said Paul Thieken, Cree, marketing director for LED components. "Determining even basic LED system parameters like efficacy with only data sheet graphs and characteristics used to be a time-consuming process.
