March 5, 2012 - Philips and Ecophon have partnered to create free-hanging acoustic ceiling panels with integrated LED lighting, which they say will absorb sound in open-plan offices. According to the company, the Soundlight Comfort ceiling panel not only provides office compliant and energy-efficient lighting, but has also been designed to reduce ceiling clutter and exhibits a clean and minimalist look that adds to the interior design of the space. The solution is particularly designed for new buildings equipped with Thermally Activated Building Systems (TABS), which work through the ‘concrete core of the building’ (exposed ceilings) to help retain heat and cool the building.

Future Lighting Solutions announced the completion of a bridge lighting project in the Chinese city of Harbin, which utilizes 1,288 linear floodlights containing 12,000 LUXEON Rebel LEDs. The new lighting, spanning the 1,565-meter Songhuajiang Bridge over the Songhua River, was designed and manufactured by Roled Opto Electronics Shanghai Co., Ltd., with LEDs and solution support supplied by Future Lighting Solutions.

Roled used LUXEON Rebel LEDs in the floodlights because of their proven long-term reliability, says the company, including the ability to withstand Harbin’s extreme temperatures which range from 28°C to -24°C that. Other key considerations, says the company, included the ability to run at a drive current of 700 mA, thereby reducing the LED count and associated costs required to generate the necessary light output, and assured LED supply under Future’s inventory management program.

According to the company, the use of LED illumination in the project reduces energy consumption by as much as 80% and provides a 50,000-hour lifetime that minimizes bulb replacement frequency in the difficult-to-reach bridge girders. Future Lighting Solutions assisted Roled with thermal and optical simulations, as well as component recommendations including the National driver used in the system design.

“The Songhuajiang Bridge is a showcase lighting project,” said Derkson Liu, marketing manager for Roled Opto Electronics. “It’s in the 10th largest city in China, and the bridge lighting can be seen at night from at least 1.5 kilometers away. Reliability is therefore essential, and Future (Lighting Solutions) was able to demonstrate that LUXEON Rebel LEDs met all of our performance criteria.”
