BESt stands for Building Environmental Standards. First launched nationally by BOMA Canada four years ago, the voluntary program has been embraced by the commercial real estate industry in Canada, which recognizes its value in providing the mechanisms for common practices and increased sustainability across the industry.

“Given that we have at present 220 additional applications in process, with new ones being added to the queue all the time, we expect many more buildings to attain certifications this year,” says Diana Osler Zortea, President of BOMA Canada. “The continuing surge of queries and applications is firm proof of the success of this innovative and worthwhile program.”

The Trillium Executive Centre achieved BOMA BESt Level 3 certification. Built in 1989, it is a 676,000 square foot, seven-storey building comprised of one atrium connecting three office towers. Among the building’s numerous tenants are Ceridian Canada Ltd. and Stantec Consulting Ltd. The office building operates 12 hours per day, five days per week and includes energy-efficiency features such as energy-efficient light emitting diodes (LEDs) on exit signs as well as automated lighting controls with motion sensors in the parking garage. Other features include tenant submetering and zone control rain sensors which are used to reduce the need for additional irrigation on this suburban property.

“We chose to pursue BOMA BESt certification for the Trillium Executive Centre because we believe that the program provides a concrete way to demonstrate our commitment to sustainability while improving our properties’ performance on key environmental benchmarks,” says Carmen Romagnuolo, Director, Technical Services of GWL Realty Advisors. “BOMA BESt is now a vital part of our strategic planning because it provides a consistent, effective methodology that tenants recognize as enhancing their workplaces.”
