CertainTeed’s MemBrain an alternative to poly vapour barrier sheeting

May 1, 2015 - CertainTeed Insulation Group Canada has introduced a new “smart” vapour and air barrier film called MemBrain.

May 1, 2015  By  Renée Francoeur

CertainTeed MemBrain looks similar to polyethylene sheeting, but is actually a patented polyamide-based material, according to the company. MemBrain adapts its permeability depending on climatic conditions, Certain Teed added.

“While efficient insulation is essential in a home, so is the need for vapour barrier sheeting,” said Marlon Thompson, CertainTeed marketing product manager. “Using MemBrain reduces risk and liability due to moisture problems.”

Thompson noted the product will add about $300 to $500 to the total cost of an average 2400-sf home.

When the relative humidity in the cavity increases, MemBrain’s water vapour permeability increases. This allows water vapour to escape the wall cavity when the humidity is high, increasing the drying potential of closed building envelope systems, CertainTeed said.

MemBrain may also be installed as a continuous, interior air barrier system over unfaced fibre glass or other insulation requiring a separate vapour or air barrier.
