FortisBC received approval from the British Columbia Utilities Commission to invest more than $155 million into conservation and energy efficiency programs in 2023, marking the highest annual investment by the energy utility to date. “We’re always looking for innovative solutions to help lower energy use and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in sustainable and affordable ways for our customers,” said Joe Mazza, vice-president, Energy Supply and Resource Development.

The 2023 ECO Canada Environmental Workforce Salary and Demographics Survey is conducted by Leger Research for ECO Canada. It aims to gather data from Canadian environmental workers and employers to develop a demographic profile of the environmental workforce as well as a useful compensation guide.

Emissions Reduction Alberta is launching a funding competition to advance technologies that “enable a more resilient, efficient, and reliable energy system”. The $50-million “Reshaping Energy Systems” call for proposals is exploring energy transport and distribution technology, energy storage, digital solutions for energy management, demonstrating grid-interactive building efficiency technologies, low-emission vehicle infrastructure and fleets. “ERA funding provides an opportunity to put these technologies to the test [...]” said Grant Wiens, director, Engineering, Fortis.

In a letter to its customers, Universal Douglas Lighting Americas announced it is ceasing operations. In a separate statement provided to Electrical Business Magazine, chief restructuring officer Steve Wybo points to “the lasting impact of the Covid-19 pandemic”, which has “hit all sides” of the company through a “combination of shortages, delays and high costs in industries vital to the LED industry”.

The Green Municipal Fund’s Sustainable Affordable Housing initiative is providing funding to several projects in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick: “Today’s announcement means that many families in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, including 40 in Dartmouth-Cole Harbour, will have a safe place to call home.
