Hydro Ottawa chooses Opus One energy management platform for MiGen program

Local businesses can participate in micro-generation.

Hydro Ottawa has selected Toronto-based Opus One Solutions’ GridOS Transactive Energy Management (TEM) software platform for its MiGen Transactive Grid program, which helps businesses and other customers generate, store and distribute power.

Through MiGen (see video), which is funded by Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan’s) smart grid program, participating Hydro Ottawa customers generate electricity from solar panels installed on their property. This energy can be used immediately, stored in battery systems, shared with neighbours or even sent to the grid for credit.

These dynamic and complex applications are not feasible, however, without software designed to manage them. Opus One’s GridOS-TEM provides location- and time-specific price signals to optimize the dispatching of electricity in terms of cost-effectiveness for participating businesses.

“We’re proud to be enabling Ottawa’s transactive grid with our software and providing a model that can potentially be replicated by other utilities across the country to build smarter grids,” says Hari Subramaniam, Opus One’s chief of strategic growth.
