IESO report aims to improve water treatment facilities’ energy efficiency

March 1, 2019 – Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) has published a new report with recommendations for improving the energy efficiency of water and wastewater treatment facilities across the province.

March 1, 2019  By  Peter Saunders

The report, titled ‘Market Characterization & Conservation Potential for Ontario’s Drinking Water & Wastewater Treatment Plants,’ follows research in 2018 that showed such facilities are the largest users of energy for most municipal governments, accounting for more than a third of their total consumption.

In response, the report presents a variety of options for reducing both consumption and costs, including operational and systemic changes, shifting energy use from peak to off-peak times and tapping into existing opportunities. Notably, it also recommends hiring dedicated energy managers or training in-house facility operators to do the job.
