Lighting systems get self-powered occupancy sensor

December 11, 2018 – Wireless device manufacturer EnOcean will soon launch a solar-powered occupancy sensor for Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) lighting control systems, which it claims is the first of its kind on the market.

The ceiling-mounted—but also freely positionable—passive infrared sensor (PIR), set to debut at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nev., in January 2019, is the latest in the company’s Easyfit portfolio of battery-free BLE switches for plug-and-play Internet of Things (IoT) lighting systems. Tiny, integrated solar cells harvest ambient light, which is then stored to ensure uninterrupted operations.

Beyond occupancy detection, the device also features another sensor to allow light level control, along with a near field communication (NFC) interface for wireless integration with NFC readers, smartphones or tablet computers.
