AI to drive energy savings for Solvay plant in Welland, Ont.

December 4, 2018 – Stem is deploying an energy storage system (example pictured) with artificial intelligence (AI) for Solvay’s manufacturing plant in Welland, Ont., to help reduce its energy costs, particularly its Global Adjustment (GA) charges.

“Manufacturers and industrial companies typically have intense energy expenses,” says John Carrington, CEO of Stem.

The Welland plant manufactures phosphine for use in consumer electronics and other applications. Stem’s AI, Athena, will rely on predictive analytics and high-speed data feeds from buildings, the wholesale energy market and weather services to anticipate peak hours for the province’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) grid, then release stored energy at optimal times.

“Intelligent energy storage systems are promising technologies to decouple electricity production from consumption and a creative solution to the problem of increasingly strained power grids,” says Pascal Chalvon-Demersay, Solvay’s chief sustainability and energy officer.
