Energy consultant Arthur A. Irwin passes away
January 14, 2019 – Arthur A. Irwin, a well-known Halifax-based energy consultant, passed away on Jan. 7 and was honoured posthumously by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) with the Distinguished Fellow Award.

Irwin studied heating and ventilation technology at the Halifax Regional Vocational School, completing a three-year course in 1955. He worked for 20 years with Wm. Stairs Son & Morrow, establishing and managing an industrial heating department for commercial equipment sales.
He was a consultant for 18 years with Nova Scotia’s department of energy, for eight years with Kerr Controls’ Atlantic Canada branches and, finally, with his own practice, Irwin Energy Consulting Services, undertaking energy assessments of building envelopes and heating systems for existing and new facilities.
Irwin taught commercial heating courses in Canada and the U.S. and was a guest speaker at HVAC and energy conferences. He joined ASHRAE in 1965 and was president of its Halifax chapter from 2004 to 2005. The organization’s Fellow program recognizes members for attaining distinction and making substantial contributions to research, education, publications, mentoring, engineering design and consultation.
For 29 years, Irwin was a monthly guest on CBC Radio’s Maritime Noon phone-in show, answering callers’ energy-related questions. And outside the industry, he was a professional percussionist, photographer and public relations (PR) manager, promoting the Halifax Jazz Festival, the Canadian Ski Association and other organizations.
His service was held yesterday at Halifax’s J.A. Snow Funeral Home.
