Dow Chemicals’ LiquidArmour and Eaton’s SkyRidge among 2016 Edison Award winners

May 9, 2016 - A few industry players have been recognized with a 2016 Edison Award, an annual competition “honouring excellence in new product and service development, marketing, human-centered design, and innovation”.

Eaton’s Metalux SkyRidge LED—with an integrated sensor control system—has been named a bronze winner in the Building Construction & Lighting Innovations category.

“It’s exciting to see companies like Eaton continuing Thomas Edison’s legacy of challenging conventional thinking,” said Frank Bonafilia, executive director, Edison Awards. “Edison Awards recognizes the game-changing products and services, and the teams that brought them to consumers.”

The SkyRidge LED luminaires feature aesthetics from Eaton’s WaveStream LED technology, which provides optical control and efficiency, with energy savings of up to 62% compared to traditional fluorescent alternatives, according to Eaton.

Ecovent took home the gold in the Work & Home Environment category. It’s a “smart home system that delivers room-by-room temperature control through self-configuring sensors and vents.”

Dow Chemicals secured the gold medal in the Building Construction & Lighting Innovations category for its LiquidArmor, a sprayable liquid sealant and flashing product that “seals insulation joints and other cracks to reduce air and water leakage, as well as improve overall management of thermal, moisture and air quality in a building”.

The Securock ExoAir 430 System by USG Corporation is “the first-ever barrier panel that fully protects buildings from air, water, vapour and thermal factors” and it garnered the silver medal, also in the Building Construction & Lighting Innovations category.

It was silver, too, for NEXTracker’s SPT (self-powered tracker) in the Edison Carbon Reduction category. This SPT enables solar utilities to track the sun’s position and adjust photovoltaic panel position to boost energy yield—without tapping into the grid, NEXTracker said.

Concurrent Technologies Corporation was handed over the silver in the Re-use & Reclamation section for its SYLAS-R2, which it calls a decentralized, scalable, and energy-efficient system for shower and laundry wastewater recycling, “capable of achieving 90% water recovery and exceeding potable water quality standards”.

EnerMotion claims it has developed the world’s first heating and refrigeration unit powered by waste exhaust heat: the patented Hybrid Power Energy Recovery ‘HYPER’ system, which won bronze in the Re-use & Reclamation category.

GridPoint’s energy management solution took home gold in the Edison Awards’ Energy Management & Customer Solutions category, followed by Opower’s NextWeb in second and Smart Utility System’s SCM (smart customer mobile) in third.

The Edison Awards is a program by Edison Universe, a charitable organization “dedicated to fostering future innovators”. More than 3000 senior business executives and academics judge nominees and winners were recognized at the Edison Awards Annual Gala, held in in New York City last month.
