Otis Elevator enhances NCE escalator for energy efficiency

October 5, 2011 - Otis Elevator Co. (a unit of United Technologies Corp.) announced energy-efficiency enhancements to its NCE escalator, including regenerative drives, power standby features, LED lighting and high-efficiency lubrication. The ReGen drive captures energy generated by the escalator on the way down and delivers it back to the building for use by other systems, reducing energy consumption by up to 45% compared to traditional escalators, boasts Otis. Power standby technology (which uses sensors to detect when there are no passengers) prompts the escalator to slow down and thereby use less energy. Meantime, LED lighting uses 30% less energy than traditional light sources.
