March 11, 2015 – A new guide explains how to minimize energy leakage for building planners, specifically how to reduce thermal bridging. The Building Envelope Thermal Bridging (BETB) Guide is the result of over four years of work by engineering firm Morrison Hershfield in collaboration with BC Hydro Power Smart and other partners.The guide focuses on "thermal bridging," an area of heat loss that has been hard to measure and mitigate, says BC Hydro. The term refers to the pathways of high heat flow through walls, roofs and other insulated building envelope components that allow heat to bypass the insulating layer, effectively defeating the purpose of the insulation.The BETB Guide provides methods for understanding and mitigating thermal bridging in the design phase. Since heat loss and air leakage across the exterior envelope can account for more than 50% of the total energy load, addressing thermal bridging can mean reduced significant energy savings over the lifetime of the structure, according to BC Hydro."The BETB Guide illustrates that, depending upon the building type and the insulated envelope assembly, actual building heat loss can be up to four times greater than is generally accounted for in conventional design practice," says BC Hydro Power Smart engineer Gordon Monk, project manager for the guide.The guide is broken into three stand-alone parts. Part 1 is a catalogue of the thermal performance (effective R-values) of more than 230 envelope assembly details commonly used in B.C., with ideas about how to minimize thermal bridging.Part 2 is a cost/benefit analysis of the costs associated with improving thermal performance against forecasted energy savings. Part 3 discusses how design practitioners, as well as government and utilities, might use thermal bridging information in both design and in new building codes and bylaws.The guide will make life easier for anyone involved in new building design, says Greg McCall, energy policy specialist for the City of Vancouver."It used to take me two whole weeks to calculate the performance of a building envelope, with plans all over the floor, colour crayons everywhere," says McCall. "Now practitioners can access the latest in modern technology to calculate energy performance in far less time and with far greater accuracy."The guide was officially launched last fall. Use of the guide will become a mandatory element in applying for the New Construction Program effective April 1, 2015.Monk believes the guide is one of the most significant energy-efficiency initiatives he's been involved with throughout his career. "There has been a North America-wide gap of information about thermal bridging," he says. According to the company, its high-speed operation controls the air exchange so less energy is required to maintain building temperature. A rubber membrane on the connecting hinges of the door’s aluminum slats promises to contain heating & cooling energy and preventing air infiltration.
October 15, 2014 - The Thermal Bridging Guide intends to help British Columbia’s building industry address the impact of thermal bridging to reduce energy use. Co-funded by BC Hydro Power Smart, the Canadian Wood Council, Fortis BC, FPInnovations and the Homeowner Protection Office, it provides information relevant to B.C.’s climate, building industry and regulatory environment for builders, designers, energy modellers and those involved in setting energy standards and policy. The guide also provides a catalogue of thermal performance of various envelope assemblies and interface details, while evaluating cost effectiveness of improving the building envelope through different methods, building types and climates.
July 29, 2014 - Johns Manville (JM), a building products manufacturer, says its signature JM Spider spray-in custom fibre glass insulation has received Canadian Construction Materials Centre approval (CCMC 13212-R) for a thermal resistance of R-24 in a 2x6 wall cavity, complying with 2010 National Building Codes. The product previously offered a thermal resistance up to R-23 in a 2x6 wall cavity. Boasting superior thermal performance, JM Spider promises to fill framing cavities in wall and overhead applications in both wood and steel framing without leaving gaps and voids.
May 15, 2014 - The new Mulco Supra Elite sealant from PPG Industries is a low volatile organic compound (VOC) sealant that boasts a bubble-free seal. According to the company, the formula prevents shrinkage and provides a waterproof seal, which increases protection from weather, eliminates drafts and improves energy efficiency. Available in a range of colours, Supra Elite sealant will be sold exclusively through Canadian industrial accounts.
April 23, 2014 - Johns Manville (JM) has added commercial and residential mineral wool to its full spectrum of insulation products, giving Canadian customers more options, security and flexibility when sourcing mineral wool to meet project demands, it says. Claiming to reduce heating and cooling costs by keeping structures warm in winter and cool in summer, JM mineral wool insulation is suitable for both commercial and residential construction. The five additions to the line include two products for residential applications: TempControl Batts and Sound & Fire Block Batts; and three products for commercial or industrial applications: MinWool Sound Attenuation Fire Batts (SAFB), MinWool Safing and MinWool Curtainwall.

October 30, 2013 - FLIR Systems has released its MR77 moisture meter, designed to help users tackle critical restoration and remediation projects. According to FLIR, the MR77 accurately measures moisture content in a wide range of wood types and building materials using a pinless sensor that captures non-destructive readings up to 0.75-in. below material surfaces. The tool is also equipped to measure moisture levels using an external pin probe, and features a field-replaceable temperature and humidity sensor; a non-contact, laser-spot infrared thermometer for measuring surface temperatures and Bluetooth connectivity to Android devices.
October 15, 2013 - FLIR has released its E-Series line of thermal cameras—E4, E5, E6 and E8—aimed at professionals who need to track down electrical and mechanical overheating, moisture ingress, missing insulation, air leaks, and other issues that thermal images can detect and quantify. The termal cameras feature a 3-in. colour LCD display, wide-angle focus-free lens, on-camera button controls, on-board digital camera, and MSX technology (Multi-Spectral Dynamic Imaging), which integrates visible details from digital camera photos onto infrared (IR) images. Along with delivering a clearer thermal picture overall, MSX makes it easier to recognize the location of heat issues without obscuring or compromising the integrity of the original thermal scene, says FLIR.
October 15, 2013 - Johns Manville says its JM Corbond III closed-cell spray polyurethane foam insulation now offers a R-value of 5.9/in (11.6 ft2/hr/oF/BTU LTTR), a change that translates to a 13% higher R-value compared to previous thermal performance of 5.1/in. With the upgrade, JM Corbond III announced it has achieved a Type 2 R-value, which designates the highest level of thermal resistance for spray foam under the National Building Code of Canada. According to the company, JM Corbond III now requires significantly less product to deliver the desired R-value.
