October 15, 2013 - Johns Manville says its JM Corbond III closed-cell spray polyurethane foam insulation now offers a R-value of 5.9/in (11.6 ft2/hr/oF/BTU LTTR), a change that translates to a 13% higher R-value compared to previous thermal performance of 5.1/in. With the upgrade, JM Corbond III announced it has achieved a Type 2 R-value, which designates the highest level of thermal resistance for spray foam under the National Building Code of Canada. According to the company, JM Corbond III now requires significantly less product to deliver the desired R-value.
July 30, 2013 - Optimizing HVAC/R systems with tools, such as the Fluke VT02 visual IR thermometer, is critical to avoid wasting energy, system downtime, and expensive emergency maintenance, says Fluke. The troubleshooting camera with an infrared heat map, combines the features of a single-spot IR thermometer with the visual insight of an infrared camera. The thermal heat map is able to detect the location of potential problem areas and saves images as full visual, full infrared, or in three blended modes: 25%, 50% and 75%.
July 10, 2013 - Staying cool in the summer months is critical for proper enjoyment of personal real estate. Some parts of the world are prone to very hot summers, while others may still occasionally experience extremely warm parts of the year.
July 9, 2013 - “New energy codes are driving the need for high performance wall systems and ComfortBoard CIS provides a true continuous insulation solution for more energy-efficient wall systems,” said Brian LeVoguer, vice-president, building envelope & specification sales, Roxul. ComfortBoard CIS (commercial insulated sheathing) is a rigid, high-density, non-combustible stone wool insulation board specifically designed for use as exterior continuous insulation in commercial rainscreen wall systems. Thermally efficient and vapour permeable, Roxul says ComfortBoard CIS provides the rigidity and durability needed for many exterior cladding assemblies, such as lightweight metal and composite panel systems. Its thermal properties improve energy efficiency. The sheathing is available in 1-in., 1.25-in., 2-in., 2.5-in. and 3-in. thicknesses, with R-values of R4, 5, 8, 10 and 12, respectively.
June 25, 2013 - CertainTeed has integrated its insulation product line into ecoScorecard, an online platform, which provides architects and building professionals with instant access to environmental product information. The newly incorporated insulation products join CertainTeed’s catalogue of ceilings solutions on ecoScorecard, providing an integrated resource for information on the company's interior product offering. EcoScorecard allows specifiers to search and evaluate products based on environmental characteristics, including 1,200 unique attributes across 20 green building rating systems. The system automatically updates as rating systems change and offers access to the documentation required for project submittals.
May 27, 2013 - Johnson Controls Global WorkPlace Solutions (GWS), a provider of facilities and real estate management, has launched a new offering called Enterprise Energy Services to help Global 1000 companies reduce energy consumption and meet carbon-reduction targets. The new offering combines energy-centred operations and maintenance practices, energy advisory services and energy efficiency projects into a self-funding continuous energy improvement program, supported by an enterprise data management system. Each program can be designed to suit a company’s specific objectives and budget requirements. Typical solutions include a guaranteed reduction in energy consumption across a client’s real estate portfolio, adds Johnson Controls.
May 27, 2103 - Guardian Industries says its new Anti-Reflective (AR) coating increases light transmission up to 15%, allowing for reduced energy consumption, lower installations costs and less fixture maintenance. Guardian AR Glass for Lighting was designed to provide maximum performance and flexibility for lighting applications, while offering a single solution to increase light transmission, reduce reflection and increase the efficiency and efficacy of lighting fixtures, describes the company. The glass can be used for various lighting applications including: area and flood lighting, roadway lighting, downlighting, industrial and architectural lighting, landscape lighting and residential lighting.
April 29, 2013 - Johns Manville has launched the JM Insulation Project Guide, a mobile tool and website to guide homeowners and insulation professionals select products and practices to meet project needs. The JM Insulation Project Guide takes site visitors through a four-step process to select, purchase and install JM insulation products. After selecting an area in the home, site visitors can add the room dimensions before choosing to tackle the project themselves or find a qualified installer. The JM Insulation Project Guide will then suggest insulation products, the estimated amount of insulation products needed and any other tools and equipment that would be helpful. The JM Insulation Project Guide is accessible from any smartphone and does not require an application download.
April 19, 2013 - 3M Canada Construction introduced its new self-adhered air and vapour barrier membrane 3015, which is a one-step solution that does not require the use of a primer. It replaces the task of priming and applying the common asphalt-type self-adhered membrane, promising quick install with pressure-sensitive, acrylic-based adhesive. It can also be applied at temperatures as low as -18C. “As buildings are required to be increasingly energy efficient, ensuring membrane seals keep moisture out and air in, is essential,” said Steve Gillis, business manager, 3M Canada Construction. The membrane adheres to a variety of materials, including concrete, anodized aluminum, galvanized metal, exterior gypsum sheathing and plywood.
March 20, 2013 - GAF has announced CREST—the Cool Roof Energy and Sustainability Tool—to help contractors, consultants and building owners compare the energy cost savings of different roofing systems options. CREST is mobile-enabled, with preloaded utility cost information by postal code. According to GAF, CREST allows the building professional to print a customized report that includes images of the building site from publicly-available, internet-based mapping services, and searches rebates to the postal code level, including municipal and utility rebates, to help offer a truer sense of the real costs and benefits of different roofing system decisions. To help ease the process of projecting peak energy loads, CREST queries both the Oak Ridge National Labs (ORNL) “CoolCalc” and “CoolCalc Peak” calculators in a single step.
March 16, 2013 - Roxul Inc., a North American manufacturer of stone wool insulation products, has launched the RSPEC online tool, which promises architects and specifiers easy access to the information they need to specify insulation in commercial projects. RSPEC includes information such as: Roxul insulation product information; individual product specs; case studies and project profiles; continuing education opportunities; technical information, and; My Stuff (a user’s customized virtual portfolio). MyStuff—the only registration-required section of the website—allows users to create their own customized virtual portfolio of information. It automatically archives and updates technical data sheets, and enables users to save and store information tailored to their particular needs and projects.
