November 13, 2012 - This column title plays on both the noun lighting and verb lighting to provide two different meanings. Which way did you read it? As the community of folks who provide lighting control? Or the action word for our job to provide lighting to several communities? Yes we are going to talk about both, but first.
October 19, 2012 - The ZigBee Alliance has passed its first “decade of successes” and 600 ZigBee Certified product milestone this month—celebrating one technology, nine standards and numerous ZigBee chips sold in its 10-years of operation, it said.
September 25, 2012 - Now that we're more than halfway through September, the autumn weather feels like it's quickly approaching. If you happen to be away from home, but left a window open, either deliberately or accidentally, you may be in for a wet surprise when you come home.
August 27, 2012 - Electronic Systems Protection (ESP) has announced the eCommandCenter, an energy management and power protection platform which claims to allow businesses to monitor and manage energy consumption, protect equipment, and implement sustainability programs, down to the plug level. The platform also has the capability to integrate energy consumption data into existing databases to enable business managers to monitor energy consumption data within their own system. July 30, 2012 - The Siemens Building Technologies’ energy indicator software can be used to check the energy-efficient operation of HVAC plants, components and individual rooms. The tool also makes it possible to adapt the operating parameters of the plants and rooms manually over the internet. With the software, room and plant operators can very identify settings in their equipment that are not conducive to efficient energy consumption. Room users can change the plant settings and adapt them to their personal comfort levels. At regular intervals, the energy indicator lets them know whether the selected parameters are energy efficient; meantime, operators can receive an e-mail notice when a plant is not operating energy efficiently. The software is integrated into the OZW772 and OZW672 web servers, v. 4 and higher, and can be used with all communications-enabled standard controllers from Siemens that have a KNX or LPB communications bus, including the Synco and Synco-living systems, several Sigmagyr and Albatros 2 models, as well as a number of room controllers and room thermostats.
July 26, 2012 - SCL Elements, manufacturer of Can2Go products, has unveiled its new line of smart wireless peripherals, which includes the TE2 terminal unit and the DA2 proportional damper/valve actuator, based on the Belimo MP‐Bus platform. The peripherals are designed to keep functioning according to their programming, even if the control system goes down, thereby maintaining efficiency until everything returns to normal, says SCL Elements. July 23, 2012 - HP has completed installation of an HP EcoPOD at its Alpharetta, Ga., next-generation data centre (NGDC), describing it as the world's most efficient data centre. The HP EcoPOD is located on-site and expands the compute space of one of the HP data centres that was a part of the company’s original transformation to consolidate 85 internal IT data centres worldwide to six NGDCs. Fully populated, the 40'-HP EcoPOD will hold 2,000 new HP ProLiant and HP Integrity servers, the compute-capacity equivalent to approximately 20,000 sf. of the company’s existing NGDC space. According to the company, the HP EcoPOD can reduce energy use by 95% when compared to a traditional facility. HP
July 18, 2012 - GE released the Multilin EPM 6010, a power meter that can communicate using both BACnet/IP and Modbus TCP protocols. GE says the EPM 6010 provides accurate and timely energy use data, allowing a building automation system (BAS) to better respond to changes in demand. The meter gives building management systems access to 40 predefined BACnet objects, which allows the meter to integrate into the automation system. In addition to BACnet, the meter’s web interface allows users to track energy usage remotely with a standard browser, and the Modbus TCP interface permits interoperability with HMI software such as Multilin EnerVista Viewpoint Monitoring. The EPM 6010 provides true RMS multifunction measurements, including voltage, current, power, frequency and 0.2% energy accuracy in compliance with modern IEC and ANSI accuracy standards.
July 18, 2012 - Eaton Corp. launched Power Xpert 200E gateway, a solution that collects energy usage data from meters, enabling customers to benchmark energy usage, set energy management goals, determine the effectiveness of energy management initiatives, and reduce energy costs. The Power Xpert 200E gateway reports on energy usage at the device, building and campus levels, indicating energy usage trends and developing a baseline to enable customers to maximize energy efficiency. The gateway is engineered to be used as a data acquisition tool for serially communicating energy meters through an embedded web server or connect to ethernet-based applications, including enterprise management, demand response and smart grid programs. With the Eaton Digital Input Module, the Power Xpert 200E gateway can also monitor and water, air, gas, electric and steam meters, so that customers can monitor energy usage patterns and identify opportunities for efficiency and improvements. No software is required to access energy data, yet the data is importable into other systems.
July 11, 2012 - New requirements for windows, embedded in everything from the 2012 IECC (International Energy Conservation Code) which calls for U-factors down to 0.32 to Energy Star upgrades and the DOE’s R-5 (U = 0.20) window program are clear evidence of the trend toward higher performance expectations.
July 5, 2012 - Much of my life was spent discovering the power of control languages in the newly invented direct digital control systems. With these powerful languages I was able to do what had never been done before, create relationships never imagined, and achieve amazing solutions for both operations and energy reduction - it was the best of times. For more than you would ever want to know about that view our Our Ongoing Open Control Programming Language Discussions.
July 4, 2012 - SCL Elements, manufacturer of Can2Go products, has launched the dashboard feature of its Web BEMS, which displays visualizations of customizable realtime building monitoring data. Users can create dashboards by dragging and dropping widgets of graphs, charts and gauges on a canvas, then associating them with objects, trend logs and variables already configured in the Web BEMS. Dashboards can be categorized by room, zone, floor or entire buildings. CAN2GO SCL ELEMENTS
