Final year of free fridge pick-up with SaskPower

April 12, 2016 - SaskPower’s Fridge Recycling Program is back for its final year, announced the utility. As in previous years, you can call or book online for a crew to pick up old fridges or freezers to be recycled, for free.

“You can save up to $130 a year on your power bill by removing your old fridge or freezer,” said SaskPower’s Janson Anderson. “We’ll do the heavy lifting so you have more time to barbecue at home or relax at the cottage.”

To qualify for free pick-up, fridges and freezers must be “regular-sized” (10-25 cf); fridges must be from 2004 or older, while freezers of any age qualify.

The appliance must be in working condition, owned by you, and clean, empty and defrosted. Crews must also be able to remove it safely. Collection crews may refuse any appliance they feel cannot be removed without possibly harming staff or damaging property.

Commercial fridges and freezers do not qualify.

SaskPower says that, after six years and more than 31,000 appliances recycled, “many of the power-guzzling fridges in the province have been recycled”. Customers who recycled their fridge through the program helped save roughly 4.6 megawatts of power, says the utility.
