Fredericton and New Maryland beat out Moncton, Riverview and Dieppe to claim the community challenge prize of $10,000 in energy investments for local YMCAs.

Beat the Peak’s official results (see www.energy-manager.ca/industry-news/new-brunswickers-urged-to-join-beat-the-peak-energy-challenge for more information on the contest) saw residents of the two Fredericton communities share 143.3 peak saver tips (per capita) edge out the Moncton communities, which shared 137.4 tips over the course of the three-week challenge that wrapped up on February 6.

More than 3,000 NB Power customers from across the province joined the online challenge, said the company.

The contest set out to combat New Brunswickers’ tendencies to crank up their electric heaters, hot water, devices and gadgets all at the same time during cold snaps, usually on weekdays between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m., creating an increased demand on New Brunswick’s power grid, added the company.

“It was terrific to see such incredible participation from customers both in, and outside these communities during this challenge,” said Gaëtan Thomas, president and CEO of NB Power. “It is one of many opportunities to come for our customers to help reduce our reliance on fossil fuel energy during extreme cold while building smart energy habits that will help them put money back in their pockets.”

NB Power also awarded 60 prizes that included prepaid gift cards and programmable thermostat packages during the three-week Beat the Peak challenge to customers across New Brunswick. A list of those winners is available online.
