Will Village at RiverBend be world’s most advanced community?

“Building energy-efficient communities is one of the cleanest and most cost-effective ways to meet the power needs of our homes and businesses, today and into the future,” said Milfred Hammerbacher, CEO of S2E. “The development of SMART, sustainable communities not only creates jobs, but also creates endless possibilities for other green design projects and services.”

The Village will be built on an energy-producing smart grid designed to enable the buildings themselves to generate and share all the energy the community needs. Modern technology will make it possible and affordable for unused energy to be stored for future use, they say, citing electric vehicles for storing energy, and using excess heat generated in some parts of the community to augment power to greenhouses or community pools.

A feasibility study conducted by S2E determined the technologies and designs that would be needed to economically create the “smartest, most-sustainable community in the world”. The study included a stakeholder team comprising over 90 professionals from major local organizations, including Sifton Properties, London Hydro, City of London, London Economic Development Corp., MITACS and 11 universities and colleges.
