Winnipeg launches Building Energy Disclosure Project

The City of Winnipeg has created the Building Energy Disclosure Project (BEDP), an initiative aimed at helping the city’s commercial and institutional building owners better understand the energy performance of their buildings while supporting overall reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption.

The city is calling on building owners to register for the free program and agree to disclose key building energy metrics for inclusion on a public disclosure map.

Those participating in the voluntary program will receive free access to educational workshops offered by the city  and the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC), along with assistance with creation of an ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager account and review of application for ENERGY STAR certification.

“The building sector is the second largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in Winnipeg,” said Gurmeet Singh Ghera, the City’s Green Buildings Specialist.

“This data could be used to make their buildings more environmentally friendly, comfortable, and less expensive to operate,” said Ghera

To be involved the commercial or institutional buildings must be located within the Winnipeg city limits and be a minimum of 20,000 sq. ft.

The Building Energy Disclosure Project is made possible by a financial contribution from the Government of Canada’s Department of Natural Resources.
