Comox Community Centre to upgrade several systems for greater efficiency, fewer GHGs

April 24, 2023  By  Anthony Capkun

April 24, 2023 – Thanks to funding from both Ottawa and the Town of Comox, the Comox Community Centre (Comox, B.C.) will undergo some modernization efforts that aims to make it more energy efficient and emit fewer GHGs (greenhouse gases).

The Government of Canada is providing $376,917 through the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program, and the town is contributing $108,915.

Gas-fired domestic hot water heating systems will be upgraded to electric heat pumps, and the existing lighting will be upgraded to LED lighting. Gas-fired rooftop units will be upgraded to electric atmospheric heat pumps.

These upgrades will enable the centre to reduce its energy consumption by an estimated 30.2%, says Infrastructure Canada, and its GHG emissions by about 25.3 tonnes.

“We look forward to these upgrades, and are grateful for this grant from Infrastructure Canada to our Comox Community Centre,” said Mayor Nicole Minions. “It is one more step forward in achieving our goal of near net-zero emissions by 2030.”
