Energy Manager

February 27, 2024 – A new resource for staff of small- to medium-sized municipalities who are tasked with “significantly reducing energy and emissions” is now available from The ReCover Initiative and QUEST Canada.

With advice gathered from experts in the field, “Getting the Most Out of Your Retrofits” is a report that aims to help municipal staffers get deep retrofit work off the ground in their municipality.

It emphasizes that, by incorporating other community priorities into retrofit work, you will help get everyone’s attention and local citizens on board.

“A key takeaway from the expert interviews is the need to include people from across the municipality,” notes co-author Gemma Pinchin, QUEST. “Deep retrofit projects should include everybody involved in the facility from the beginning, including a broad project team, and an integrated approach to reduce some of the traditional implementation struggles.”

Plus, the deep retrofit space is growing and creating jobs, which is a key avenue to reaching Canada’s net-zero targets, say the authors. Municipalities can support this work by exploring alternative approaches to design and procurement.

Municipalities’ building stock is responsible for about 50% of GHGs produced across Canada, notes co-author Emma Norton (ReCover). “Canadian municipalities are in a unique position to impact Canada’s climate targets.”
