Osram Sylvania’s “Next Icon LED Design Challenge” nets innovative lighting ideas from its partners

MISSISSAUGA, ON — OSRAM SYLVANIA, a global leader in lighting innovation, has announced the qualifying participants and winners of The Next Icon OSRAM LED Design Challenge, a competition recognizing excellence in LED design solutions.

The challenge was an invitation to Canadian manufacturers of lighting fixtures to design viable lighting solutions utilizing LED components and technology supplied by OSRAM.

“Our goal is help further Canadian innovation and create awareness of the environmental and economic advantages of LED applications,” said Steven Duff, OSRAM SYLVANIA’s Director, Special Lighting Markets. LEDs or Light emitting diodes are quickly becoming a more widespread form of lighting due to the technology’s reliability, long life, energy efficiency and low maintenance requirements. In addition, they offer unique capabilities for architectural enhancements, decorative lighting and signage applications because of their small size and system flexibility. In addition to higher efficiency, LED systems last up to 50 times longer than traditional incandescent lamps. Added Duff, “The challenge is part of OSRAM SYLVANIA’s ongoing commitment to fostering and developing LED solutions as well as working with manufacturers to make these concepts a reality.”

The fixture prototypes were exhibited to members of the design, specification and lighting industry at the recent Light Canada Expo at the IIDEX design show in Toronto. The winners were then chosen through popular vote.

With an eye to future collaboration, winners were awarded as Partners in three categories. The Gold Partner is Toronto-based Zaneen with their appealing SOL wall fixture that uses only 1 watt of energy by utilizing the OSRAM HF2X LED. The Silver Partner is Illumineer, Toronto, with an innovative magnetic voltage connector called Falkor that can swivel 360 degrees yet maintain a secure electrical connection. This fixture incorporated the OSRAM DRAGONStick LED. And the Bronze Partner is TMS Lighting, Brampton, ON, with their contemporary Winston entry, a wall-mounted outdoor fixture featuring the OSRAM DLM 800 for both uplighting and downlighting

Duff said the feedback was very positive. “Overall, those who had the opportunity view all of the designs submitted by our LED ICON Partners were excited about the development of innovative LED technology as a viable solution for new fixtures in the marketplace.”

All submissions had to meet specific requirements to be accepted into the Challenge Among the many submitted entries were concept designs for a wide range of applications including streetlighting, wall sconces, pendant and ceiling mounted fixtures for indoor and outdoor applications.

The entries are currently on display at Lightpoint Canada in Mississauga, the premier interactive lighting educational facility in the country.
