SaskPower’s free Fridge Recycling Program returns for 2015

Now in its fifth year, the program has collected more than 27,000 fridges and freezers, which can be replaced with updated appliances that consume up to four times less electricity, according to SaskPower.

‟Over the last five years, customers have helped us save more than four megawatts of power through this program. That’s reducing an amount of carbon dioxide equivalent to planting almost 3.5 million full-grown trees,” said Janson Anderson, the company’s customer programs director. ‟Recycling these appliances also safely disposes tonnes of Freon, mercury, metals and hydrocarbons, instead of having them lie in a landfill.”

Households can save $100 or more annually by getting rid of old fridges and freezers and replacing them with more efficient ones, Saskpower added.

“SaskPower makes it really convenient to move out old fridges and freezers so homeowners don’t need to,” Anderson said. ‟We’ll schedule a time that works for you, remove the appliance and have it safely broken down and recycled responsibly. In the end, it’s good for the environment; it reduces stress on our power grid; and saves customers money.”

As an example, a fridge built in 1979 can cost $285 annually in electricity while a more recent fridge would only use $45, Saskpower noted.
