Energy Star Canada recognizes its 2023 champions

October 31, 2023 – Natural Resources Canada congratulated 16 organizations and 11 buildings for winning 2023 Energy Star Canada Awards for advancing energy efficiency. These awards recognize organizations that have “demonstrated excellence in offering Canadians the most energy-efficient products and technology available on the market”. Congratulations to the following:

ENERGY STAR FOR BUILDINGS

Building of the Year, Hospital: Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital

• Implemented an ISO 50001-based energy management system.
• Put in place operational and maintenance best practices, including building automation system (BAS) energy monitoring and adjustments, and prompt response to maintenance issues to ensure efficient operation.

Building of the Year, Ice and Curling Rink: Erin Mills Twin Arena

• Created an energy dashboard that continuously monitors building operations and energy consumption.
• Implemented a fault detection system that notifies building staff.
• Retrofitted existing fluorescent lights in rinks and interior spaces to LED.
• Upgraded the ice plant equipment and sequence of operation to optimize plant performance and increase efficiency.
• Switched from hot water to cold water ice resurfacing.

Building of the Year, K-12 School: Bliss Carman Middle School, Anglophone West School District

• Implemented low-occupancy programming to optimize savings.
• Improved building management graphics to allow for more rapid response to energy-saving control modes.
• Used Energy Star Portfolio Manager to monitor the progress of changes in the school’s energy use and provided visual feedback on successes.
• Maintained a culture of energy awareness and conservation.

Building of the Year, Medical Office: Etobicoke Wellness Centre

• Adjusted HVAC equipment for early start-up (before peak hours) to reduce costs.
• Adjusted building automation system time schedule based on tenant turnover.
• Installed occupancy sensors in tenant spaces and common areas.
• Conducted continuous preventive maintenance on electrical and HVAC equipment.
• Installed variable frequency drive on pump motors to save energy.

Building of the Year, Multifamily Housing: 600 Proudfoot Lane

• Delivered tenant education on conservation.
• Retrofitted parking garage and vanity lighting, and initiated a program to upgrade air-conditioning units.

Building of the Year, Office: Cadillac Fairview, Yonge Corporate Centre – 4110 Yonge Street

• Fine-tuned the boiler modulation to ensure maximum efficiency and energy savings while maintaining boiler integrity.
• Reduced outside air amounts twice during the year while ensuring that the fan systems and CO2 levels were continually monitored.
• Fine-tuned chiller plant operation to integrate the operation of all major pieces of equipment (e.g. chillers, cooling towers, pumps). By varying the setpoint for each, overall chiller plant efficiency improved.
• Monitored and implemented regular corrective measures to the building automation system.
• Conducted several audits and implemented measures to improve the efficiency of the building’s after-hours operation.

Building of the Year, Office: 6985 Financial Drive

• Adjusted HVAC and lighting systems schedules to reflect building occupancy.
• Initiated a net-zero carbon feasibility study.

Building of the Year, Office: Sun Life Waterloo King

• Replaced coils in multiple air-handling units.
• Refurbished multiple pumps to improve efficiency.
• Retrofitted light fixtures in an area of approx. 50,000 sq. ft with LED lighting.

Building of the Year, Office: Brian Canfield Centre

• Implemented LED lighting retrofits.
• Updated building controls on electric heating systems.
• Replaced original HVAC system fans with modular, fan wall arrangements.

Building of the Year, Senior Living Community and Residential Care Facility: Sunrise of Windsor

• Energy use monitoring.
• Implemented scheduled maintenance practices.

Building of the Year, Warehouse: Spartan Controls Grande Prairie Automation Centre

• Serviced a record number of valves through the building contributing to significant energy savings.
• Completed five control system upgrades for various customers.
• Added a steam boiler for liquid valve testing in the building.
