Fountain Park Rec Centre to undergo energy efficiency retrofits

November 22, 2023  By  Anthony Capkun

November 22, 2023 – Fountain Park Recreation Centre in St. Albert, Alta., is the beneficiary of $5 million for retrofits, courtesy of the Green Municipal Fund’s (GMF) Community Buildings Retrofit initiative.

Of the $5 million, $1.25 million is a grant, while the remaining $3.75 million is a loan. The retrofit project—valued at $10,552,032—is expected to wrap up in 2024.

The retrofits aim to modernize and increase the energy efficiency of the 45-year-old building. Tactics will include the installation of high-efficiency boilers, a lighting system upgrade, the installation of energy-efficient windows, and replacement of the air-handling units.

When complete, the building’s energy consumption is expected to drop 30%, and utility costs are expected to decrease by over $98,000 per year. Emissions, meantime, are expected to go down 42%.

The Community Buildings Retrofit initiative is part of a $950-million federal top-up of FCM’s Green Municipal Fund, designed to accelerate energy efficiency and lower emissions across Canada.
