Get the lowdown on energy savings with EMC’s Compressed Air Challenge (Oct. 2016)

September 29, 2016 - Excellence in Manufacturing Consortium (EMC) in partnership with Natural Resources Canada and the Canadian Industrial Program for Energy Conservation (CIPEC) is hosting special training events in Brampton, Ont. to help manufacturers achieve energy savings.

September 29, 2016  By  Renée Francoeur

The Compressed Air Challenge (CAC) is a voluntary collaboration of industrial manufacturers, distributors, associations, facility operating personnel, consultants, state research and development agencies, energy efficiency organizations and utilities—all “determined to help you realize the benefits of smart compressed air management”.

CAC training helps achieve higher productivity, reduced downtime, energy savings and greater efficiency, according to EMC. All manufacturing sectors can make their companies more profitable and energy efficient simply by getting smarter about compressed air, it adds.

There will be a one-day training event—Fundamentals of Compressed Air Systems—on October 18, 2016, for $325 as well as a two-day training October 19-20—Advanced Management of Compressed Air Systems—for $695.

In Fundamentals, participants will learn to:

• Calculate the energy cost of compressed air in facilities,
• Improve compressed air system efficiency and reliability,
• Identify inappropriate uses of compressed air,
• Establish a baseline to measure improvements in compressed air efficiency/performance,
• Find and fix leaks and establish a leak prevention program, and
• Better control compressed air to improve productivity and profitability.

In the Advanced session, participants will learn to:

• Collect and use data/tools to assess the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of compressed air systems,
• Develop and use a system profile,
• Implement a system maintenance program,
• Address air quality, highest pressure requirements and high-volume intermittent applications,
• Understand complex control system strategies,
• Align the supply side to demand side operation,
• Explain the value of heat recovery, and
• Successfully sell compressed air improvement projects to management.

Joe Ghislain will be the trainer for both sessions. He is the manager with Lean Supplier Optimization – Powertrain and has over 29 years experience with energy, powerhouse operations, compressed air systems, and operational/manufacturing efficiency improvements. Ghislain will be joined by Ron Marshall, C.E.T. (Certified Engineering Technologist) and C.E.M. with Manitoba Hydro, for the Advanced session.

The Fundamentals of Compressed Air Systems 1-day training is not a prerequisite but EMC notes it is “highly recommended” by the trainers.

Pre-registration online is required.

The training sessions begin at 8 am and go until 4 pm at the Magna Training Centre at 2550 Steeles Avenue East.
