Canadian Space Agency will “boldly go” ahead with two new Greening Government projects

Canadian Space Agency headquarters in Longueuil, Que., were named after John H. Chapman. February 27, 2024 – The Canadian Space Agency will undergo two new Greening Government Fund (GGF) projects (in addition to a third already underway).
Slated to begin this spring, the first project will see CSA perform a life cycle assessment on one of its space projects to gather relevant data on the environmental impacts of space projects contracts. This includes identifying opportunities to reduce embodied carbon and developing solutions for decarbonizing space-related research & development contracts.
Led by Natural Resources Canada and National Defence, the second project will address barriers (e.g. sizing, installation, seasonal performance, maintenance) to the adoption of lower-carbon heating options in the northern heating market.
The funding will help facility owners and managers better understand system design and costs for these heating systems, says the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat, and increase uptake of ground-source heat pumps and seawater heat pumps in the North.
The third project began in 2020, and has since optimized the use of electric heating at CSA headquarters in Longueuil, Que. Led by Natural Resources Canada, this project contributed to a 33% reduction in total GHG emissions and natural gas consumption from real property operations since 2021-2022.
The results of this project, combined with the effects of retrofits and a cleaner electric grid, enabled CSA to reduce GHG emissions from its real property portfolio by 56% since 2005/06.
