Energy storage system in Sarnia named finalist for ESNA Innovation Awards
September 27, 2018 – IHI and Convergent Energy + Power’s new battery-based energy storage system for an industrial customer in Sarnia, Ont., has been named a finalist for the 2018 Energy Storage North America (ESNA) Innovation Awards.

Submitted for the awards program by Convergent and SNC Lavalin, the 10-MW/20-MWh project is reportedly North America’s largest behind-the-meter (BTM) energy storage system. It was launched in August to help an anonymous industrial facility in Sarnia’s Chemical Valley reduce the amount of grid-supplied electricity it consumes during peak periods and, in turn, reduce its payments for Ontario’s Global Adjustment (GA) charge.
IHI provided, maintains and guarantees capacity for the 1,750-square-foot system (pictured), which combines lithium-ion battery modules with transformers and inverters. Convergent operates it, earning a portion of the savings.
“We look forward to seeing the impact this project has on Ontario’s energy landscape and welcome the opportunity to leverage our software and systems to decrease customers’ GA charges,” says Toshiaki Nishio, IHI’s managing director for energy storage.
The project is the only Canadian finalist for the 2018 Innovation Awards. The winners will be announced at a ceremony during ESNA’s conference and expo in early November.
