Green Municipal Fund building uber sports complex in Saint-Laurent

September 13, 2013 - The Montreal borough of Saint-Laurent is the happy recipient of a Green Municipal Fund $1-million grant and $10-million loan, which it will put toward the construction of an energy-efficient sports complex.

The 14,520-m2 complex will house a pool, indoor soccer field and gymnasium, and is expected to consume 64% less power than the National Energy Code for Buildings prescribes.

Geothermal systems, heat recovery systems, radiant flooring, energy recovery from wastewater, and high-performance windows will help reduce energy use at the new complex. Its energy use and performance will be monitored and documented so that adjustments can be made and energy-savings objectives reached. Lessons learned will then be circulated to help “inspire similar projects in other municipalities”.

The Government of Canada endowed the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) with $550 million to establish the Green Municipal Fund (GMF). The federation says this sports complex is an example of how GMF funding can be combined with funding from other programs to improve municipal infrastructure, says FCM.
