Ivanhoé, QuadReal and GWL first to achieve BOMA BEST Smart Buildings Certification

June 28, 2023 – The Building Owners & Managers Association of Canada revealed the first buildings to be certified under the BOMA BEST Smart Buildings Certification pilot program. Congratulations to:

• GOLD – Ivanhoé Cambridge – Place Ville Marie (Montreal)
• GOLD – QuadReal Property Group – 745 Thurlow Street (Vancouver)
• SILVER – GWL Realty Advisors – The Livmore (Toronto)

“By being part of the pilot program, you have demonstrated your teams’ leadership in managing and operating buildings that are not only energy efficient and environmentally friendly, but also intelligent, adaptable, and user-centric,” writes BOMA Canada.

“Back in 2017, when we were investigating smart technology, we discovered there was no one doing this in the multi-residential sector. We were somewhat pioneers in this asset class,” said Andrew Hollins, vice-president, Development, GWL. “What we developed and found was that smart technology is about integrating traditionally independent systems and then sharing the data across them.”

“For example, when a resident enters our building, the security system and the lighting system can now talk to each other and generate an automated response by lighting up the appropriate space,” Hollins added. “This leads to operational benefits and improves the overall user experience.”

The smart buildings certification pilot program launched two years ago to “organize and standardize the very notion of a smart building and, thereby, enable us to measure how our buildings are performing, and how they can perform in the future”. It started with over a dozen buildings across North America as pilot certification sites. The six key indicators that would be analyzed are:

1. Artificial intelligence
2. Cyber and physical security
3. Data management
4. Connectivity
5. Health and well-being
6. Sustainability
