March 5, 2025 – The Maritime Sikh Society in Halifax is pleased that its application to the federal Green and Inclusive Community Buildings (GICB) program was accepted.

“This is a grant that will allow the installation of solar panels on the 10 Parkhill Road site, resulting in net zero electricity costs […] for the next 25 to 35 years,” writes the organization.

Administered by Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada, the GICB program aims to improve the places where Canadians live and gather by reducing GHG emissions, increasing energy efficiency, enhancing climate resilience, and encouraging net-zero construction.

“Keeping up with modern technology, the Maritime Sikh Society is utilizing solar energy as a means to improving operating costs, better the environment, and have a positive impact in our local community,” said projects and infrastructure manager Virinder Singh Mangat.

The GICB program is providing $2.39 million to the society for an ambitious project which includes not only the installation of solar panels but also energy efficiency retrofits, such as insulation, weatherization, and lighting upgrades to reduce overall energy demand.

The Maritime Sikh Society is contributing $596,295.

The combined enhancements are expected to reduce the facility’s energy consumption by an estimated 93.8% and GHG emissions by 135 tonnes annually.
